Secure Access to ATO Online Services with myID

As accountants, we know that safeguarding client data and accessing tax platforms securely is essential. The Australian Government’s myID app now offers a smarter and more secure way to sign in to ATO online services via myGov—while helping protect against identity theft and tax fraud.

What Is myID?

myID is a digital identity solution that verifies who you are before granting access to government platforms. When used to sign in to ATO online services, it automatically sets your online access strength—a key factor in preventing fraud.

Setting Up Secure Access

Getting started with myID is simple:

  1. Create your myID and set your identity strength to either Standard or ideally Strong.
  2. Link myID to your myGov account by selecting “Sign in with Digital ID”.
  3. Access ATO online services—your online access strength will match your myID identity strength.

Important: Always use your myID once it’s linked. Your access strength stays active even if you temporarily disconnect or unlink.

What Is Online Access Strength?

Your access strength reflects how securely your identity was verified. There are three levels:

Access Strength Description
Strong Verified ID documents + face verification. Best protection against fraud.
Standard ID verified but without full biometric confirmation.
Not Set Logged in via SMS, passkey, or code generator—not using myID.

You can check your current access strength under Personal Details in ATO services or the ATO app.

Why Aim for Strong?

Setting your myID identity strength to Strong is highly recommended. It offers:

  • Enhanced security with biometric ID verification
  • Flexibility—works across devices and even overseas
  • Access to over 150 government services without repeated sign-ins or passwords
